One of the biggest challenges facing Central Americans is a lack of access to healthcare. This is especially true for those who live in rural communities and cannot afford to travel to a physician, nor can they afford the cost of receiving care. This affects children and adults at an alarming rate, and without proper care, these communities will continue to suffer. This is why The Foundation for the Higher Good is driven to provide healthcare and vision clinics to communities across Central America. Through our volunteers, The Foundation for the Higher Good is able to provide free healthcare to countless communities surrounding our two medical clinics. The first was built in 2015, and our second clinic was built in 2023. The clinics, located in western and southern Guatemala, provide essential care to families, women, and orphaned children who would not otherwise have access to this level of care due to financial hardships and the distance to the next closest clinic.
With access to vital healthcare, including preventative and responsive medical attention, Central Americans are able to devote more time to work, relationship building, and their communities. Thriving, healthy communities can build their own safe housing with our Higher Good Eco-Mix, feed their families through our community garden projects, and receive an education without missing days due to illness. In addition to ongoing medical care, The Foundation for the Higher Good also makes regular visits to Central American communities to provide important vision care services. Our "Eye Mission" program brings mobile clinics to different villages across Central America throughout the year. This means that a medical team of eye doctors from the USA visits these communities, offering free eye tests and providing new pairs of glasses or other necessary vision care. These clinics not only diagnose and treat common vision problems, but also educate the local population on eye health and preventive care.
Having access to vision care and glasses helps people attend school, retain employment, and better navigate the world around them. Improved vision can significantly enhance the quality of life, enabling individuals to participate more fully in their communities and contribute to their families' well-being.
