Creating Food Security in Central America

The Foundation for the Higher Good Is Combating Food Insecurity & Nutrition Education in Central America

Our Work in Central American Communities Brings Better Nutrition & Food Education to Rural Families

The Foundation for the Higher Good is dedicated to uplifting the lives of extremely impoverished individuals in Central America. While some are familiar with finding additional food sources, a significant portion of those facing food insecurity lack access to land for cultivation. Therefore, we are forging meaningful partnerships with local city authorities to establish Opportunity Gardens, which will provide the option for individuals to grow their own food. In addition to this initiative, we are expanding our food distribution program to reach more people in need.

Furthermore, we are conducting research trials to evaluate various cultural farming practices and introduce new conventional varieties of crops such as maize, squash, and tomatoes. These efforts aim to enhance agricultural productivity and food security in the region, ensuring that vulnerable communities have access to nutritious food options.

Feed Families

Battle dangerous food insecurities in Central America with The Foundation for the Higher Good

Introducing a better, more well-rounded, and nutritious diet can bring numerous benefits to an individual. Eating healthier often leads to improved health, increased energy for work or school, and a longer lifespan. In Central America, malnutrition is hindering growth, preventing children from attending school, and causing various health issues for many. In fact, 47% of children under five years old in Guatemala experience stunted growth. What contributes to this? Most rural Central Americans lack access to sufficient food to feed their families, let alone nutritious food essential for growth, development, and overall well-being. Through our work with rural Central American communities, we've observed that diets primarily consist of rice, beans, and tortillas. Without essential nutrients from fruits, vegetables, and diverse grains, malnutrition will persist in these areas.

The Foundation for the Higher Good is dedicated to combating malnutrition by providing nutrient-rich foods and educating communities. Your support can truly make a difference in our efforts to ensure that everyone has access to healthy meals.

We’re proud to provide nutritional supplements & meal-based community building in Central America

In 2021, we launched our food assistance program to support rural families facing challenges in accessing nutritious food during the pandemic. Building on our efforts in 2020, when we provided food for approximately 25,000 people during the height of the crisis, we were determined to continue our mission of helping those in need. We recognized the pressing need to improve nutrition in Central American communities and discovered freeze-dried fruits, vegetables, and additional nutritional supplements would be the most effective solutions. These nutritional enhancements are particularly beneficial for families, especially women and children, who may lack access to fresh produce and essential nutrients.

Our approach involves not just giving out food, but also fostering a sense of community and collaboration. We work with multiple families, each contributing a dish or beverage, to create complete and nutritious meals. This collaborative effort not only ensures that families have access to better food, but also strengthens bonds within the community. Join us in our ongoing efforts to expand our food distribution program and provide even more nutritious meals to families across Central America who need it most.

The Foundation for the Higher Good is introducing community gardens in rural Central America to empower families, improve food security & conduct research for sustainable solutions

The Foundation for the Higher Good is expanding its efforts beyond providing nutritional supplements to rural Central American communities. We are introducing small-scale community gardens to empower families and improve food security. Our Opportunity Garden initiative aims to support families by providing them with essential resources such as land, water, tools, seeds, fertilizer, and organic pest control products. Working closely with local authorities who manage the land, we ensure that families have access to suitable land and utility water for planting. We also offer oversight and technical assistance to guide families in cultivating their plots and becoming more self-reliant. Each family participating in the program will manage their garden plot for three years, after which new families will be given the opportunity to join the program and receive their own plot of land.

Additionally, The Foundation is enhancing its outreach efforts through field research initiatives. Currently, we are conducting tests to evaluate the adaptability of various crop varieties, including soybeans, beans, strawberries, and yams (batata). Our research farm is located in Magdalena Milpas Altas, and we plan to establish a second location in Santiago Atitlan. By testing different crops in different environments, we can identify the most suitable and productive varieties to recommend to others in need. Through these community gardens and research efforts, we are working to create sustainable solutions for food insecurity and poverty in rural Central American communities.
